Who Owns You? Three Minutes on Liberty and Property.

Unless your answer is “The Government Owns Me” then you should have a fundamental problem with laws that institutionalize violence against free will decisions on what to do with your property. Even if you say that God, not the individual, truly owns all property including our bodies, then the question remains. Does God grant us a free-will to exercise both good and bad decisions over how we handle that property? I say he does. He is perfectly content to let us enjoy the benefits or suffer the consequences of those decisions.

As a side note, the abortion issue is more complicated, but still comes down to an issue of property. Is the child within the womb an individual life, or part of the mother’s body? I believe that it is an individual life, and therefore has it’s own set of rights which must be protected. From that viewpoint, abortion is an act of violence committed against the person within the womb.

Those who support abortion usually do so from the standpoint that it is not an individual life, and is a part of the mother’s body. Therefore, abortion is acceptable because the mother has sovereignty over her own body.

The issue is one of defining whose rights, or property, are being violated in the act. As usual, the core philosophy we hold leads us to our conclusions.
