In the movie “Groundhog Day,” Bill Murray is forced to live the same day over an over again. Initially, he pursues the superficial goals of his Shell Identity. He tries to make lots of cash, get women to go to bed with him, etc. Eventually, these things no longer satisfy him. He is bored with these shallow pursuits. He tries to kill himself in many creative ways, but to no avail. He is forced to spend eternity with Chris Elliot and Punxsutawney Phil.
Finally, he figures, if I am going to live this day over and over and over again, might as well make the most of it. So he takes piano lessons. He does good deeds. He gets to know his neighbors. Bottom line, he begins to live out his Core Identity, and starts to follow his passions.
What would your ideal, perfect day look like? If you had to live the same day over and over and over and over. What would that day look like, from beginning to end?
Look, I am not going to get all “The Secret” on you. We are not the god’s of our personal universes, and we don’t always get to live our Dreamlife. But if we have never really asked ourselves what our Dreamlife looks like, then we have absolutely no chance at making it a reality.
So, here’s the criteria:
- No limitations as far as finances, geography or people. I am talking about a blank check and you get to write your own ticket.
- Nothing that would incur negative consequences. Robbing a bank, cheating on your spouse, etc. Hey, let’s be real, those things are the vain desires of the Shell Identity anyway.
- Infinitely repeatable. It’s your version of “Groundhog Day.” Create a day that you literally think you could live every day and not get sick of it.
Let your mind go wild. Here are some questions to ask yourself:
Where would I live?
What would my house look like?
What time would I wake up?
What would I do in the morning?
What would I have for breakfast?
What would I think about taking the kids to school?
What would I spend the first half of my way doing?
What would I have for lunch?
Who would I eat with?
What would my friends be like?
What would I do for personal fulfillment?
What life purpose would I strive towards?
What would my business be?
What time would I start work?
What would I do at work?
What are my clients like?
What is my family like?
What is my spouse like?
What does my spouse do for work?
What do my kids do for fun?
What do we do together?
What would I have for dinner?
Where would I eat?
What would I do at night?
Who would you do it with? Where?
What would your thoughts be as I went to sleep?
What would I do for exercise?
What is my spiritual life like?
What kind of church would I attend?
How would I give back to my community?
Food for thought. Now write it down.
This is Day 18 of the 100 Day Challenge.
